The game will likely blow, but this video is awesome.

How to save Sonic the Hedgehog

Most of what this guy is saying is gold:

http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Dimly/how-to-save-sonic-the-hedgehog-121886.phtml

The comments are a mixed bag, though; I wouldn’t bother reading them.

WOOOHOOO! Instant Sonic’s Death Cheese 2’s complete!

Hellloooo everyone! I thought I might bring everyone’s attention to InstantSonic’s hard work as he finished up his voice acting project.

You can see the post here: http://www.triplepeeps.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=197

Enjoy!

Kongregate, the status of the peeps, and more.

Haven’t posted in a while. So let’s get some stuff out there:

1) The peeps have not written or updated any fanfics in a LONG time. And normally I offer up apologies and the like. I’m not going to anymore. School is almost done for two of the three, and work and RL social obligations kept me busy. There will be more, and it may be rare, or it may suddenly come in droves of two or three a month. Thanks for your patience and for visiting the site.

2)  A while back, I spoke of how I wanted this website to become more than just a soapbox and file server for our fanfics, and those plans are still being (slowly) worked on. And if when big changes come, I intend to show all long-standing supporters some love. More in time. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

3) Sonic games still suck. But OUR Sonic interpretations still rock. Obviousness is obvious. =)

4) Kongregate.com  is an amazing site that everyone should check out. Play games for free, make an account to earn achievements, donate money to devs if you like (or just play for free if you don’t), and earn cards towards Kongai, which is like Pokemon battling but 100,000,000 times deeper, more strategic, and just overall better.

5) Sirlin.net is another amazing site that everyone should check out. It’s the personal soapbox for and forum about David Sirlin, a top-level Street Fighter player who wants to bring deep, strategic, and fun gameplay to the masses, not just those with a penchant for twitch. He balanced/designed Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix and the aforementioned Kongai. He has great articles on “Playing to Win.” I’ve been a longtime fan, and I think you’ll be one too.

Carlos out, for now.

Detective work recovers candid tell-all blog of former Sega employee

Maybe you’ve heard of this story before, and maybe you haven’t: Back in 2006, an anonymous Blogger by the name of “jpeg” appeared, claiming to be somebody within the game industry. He made various posts about both his personal life and his job (like any normal Blogger), though never anything terribly specific. That all changed in early 2007, when he made a post about NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. He spoke on a great many things; he confided that he did not have much faith in the game, despite what he considered the best efforts of Sonic Team. He knew of the game’s troubled development, which he used as a segway to discuss the internal workings of Sega and how it related to Sonic Team, claiming that he knew Sonic Team, personally, “on a professional level”.

Given the deliberately anonymous nature of his blog, though, not many people knew whether to believe him.

A month after writing his post about NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, “jpeg” deleted all of his blog posts and bid farewell to his Blogspot users. Thankfully, however, the internet never forgets: after a little bit of figurative legwork from Green Hill Zone forums user FlashTHD, an archived version of the original blog post regarding Journey of Dreams has been recovered. By now, you are probably wondering why an unconfirmed blog post from an anonymous person on the vast expanse of the internet is so important. As it turns out, one possible reason all previous posts had been removed from the blog is because “jpeg” left a little hint at the end of the post about NiGHTS:

Sonic Team are a relic from a past age who have overstayed their welcome. For the same marketing reasons that their name was initially kept (and has since backfired) they should be dissolved - it may already be too late for NiGHTS (and I really hope it isn’t and they manage to turn it around, which with Iizuka-san’s passion for the project is a possibility), but for the good of the company’s image; for the future of Sega’s other prestigious IPs and lastly for its iconic mascot it needs to be done… before they release another Sonic game with a transforming Evil ‘Night’ Sonic who looks like a werewolf and can stretch his arms out Dhalsim-style. It will happen, mark my words.

Over a year before anybody had ever spoken the word “Werehog”, this blog user had tipped us off to the existence of Sonic Unleashed. Obviously, this most likely constituted an illegal breach of NDA, resulting in all posts on the blog being removed.

Today, his blogspot account is still active, containing only his “Goodbye” post. The sidebar of his blog now contains a typical “My opinions are my own and do not reflect upon my employer, and I will not discuss my job with you” disclaimer, but most importantly, reveals the blog owner’s true name: Ben Andac. Ben Andac, as it turns out, worked as a “Game Evaluator” and an “Admissions and Recruitment Executive” for both Sega Europe and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Ben’s job was most likely to evaluate the quality of products coming out of the publisher and potentially scout for new recruits to develop software. Ben now works for online gaming website Idle Thumbs, writing editorials and reviews.  (TRISTAN EDIT: Since this story has been published, the Blogspot account linked above has been made completely inactive.)

By confirming Ben’s identity as an employee at Sega Europe, re-reading the March 2007 blog regarding the development of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams shines a spotlight directly on a side of Sega rarely seen by the public. In particular, it reveals an internal strife between Sonic Team and Sega of Japan, highlighted by the fact that NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams was originally developed as an Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 title - going so far as to say he (Ben Andac) played an Xbox 360 build of NiGHTS at one point. Upon witnessing the overnight success of the Wii, Sega of Japan apparently forced Sonic Team to retool the game for Nintendo’s lower-spec platform, something its producer (Takashi Iizuka) was not happy about. Despite the shift in platform, the game’s fast-approaching release date and limited development budget remained firmly unchanged, giving Sonic Team roughly one year to rebuild NiGHTS exclusively for the Wii (when most games typically take two years or more to develop).

As it turned out, according to Mr. Andac, after Sega had restructured itself to re-integrate external development houses like Smilebit and AM2 back in to the main Sega offices, Sonic Team was kept external strictly as a sweatshop to milk the Sonic cashcow, assembly-line style. Sega of Japan had intended NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams as a brief rest from the never-ending onslaught of Sonic game after Sonic game. In Ben’s own words: “There’s no doubt that Sonic Team have lost their quality touch. They are worse than talentless: they are without passion. Bored, weary, closed-minded and out of touch with any sense of what makes games good anymore.” Quite simply put, after making so many of them, Sonic Team is tired of Sonic games - something Ben cites as a reason for Yuji Naka’s resignation in 2006.

In the end, what this blog really represents is that, even within their own ranks, members of Sega’s staff are unhappy with the direction Sonic Team as a development studio has headed. While it was easy to assume such, we now have confirmation of internal strife between Sonic Team and their parent subsidary, Sega of Japan. In relation, this goes a long way to explain the shortcomings of games produced by Sonic Team: They are forced to work on a franchise they no longer care about, and when they do get a chance to stretch their legs, it is under tight restrictions.

Stay tuned to TSSZ as we cover all aspects of Sonic the Hedgehog and his related franchises.

Website down later this week

Our site host is migrating to a new server and has informed me that their hosted sites are expected to go down from 1-3 days. Furthermore I’ve been advised not to modify any data during that period. Starting this evening I’ll lock the blog and the forum to prevent any data loss. As soon as my host is done I’ll unlock everything.

EDIT 11/28/2008 - My host is done. Only a few hours of downtime. Disregard all of the above. =)

PAX Day 2

Second day of PAX. Not attending the third. Too many people. Too much noise. And I don’t even want to discuss the smell and the total lack of organization when it comes to lineups, demoing, and monitoring inconsiderate people who (usually both) a) overplay without thinking that maybe, just maybe, people are lined up behind you and b) don’t use and reapply deodorant.

— TALES OF SYMPHONIA: DAWN OF THE NEW WORLD —

I got some actual hands-on time with this bad boy.

I hate Namco.

BAD NEWS #1: Namco is not bringing back all of the original voice cast. Some voices are returning: Genis and Raine in the demo sound like they did. But given the new voice that Lloyd has in both Radiant Mythology and Soul Calibur Legends, that’s probably the voice actor who’ll be voicing him. And he does a fine job and all, but he’s no Teen Titans Robin.

BAD NEWS #2: According to the Namco rep, there is no Classic Controller or GameCube controller support. The game must be played with Wiimote and nunchuk (and multiplayer requires multiple sets of the two devices). When the Namco rep saw visible dissatisfaction on my part, however, he quickly packpedaled and said that he wasn’t sure. I should check the website, he told me. Bah.

BAD NEWS #3: The demo dungeon is full of puzzles. My biggest problem with Symphonia was the FLOOD of puzzle dungeons all throughout the game.

BAD NEWS #4: The dialog, while well spoken from what little I heard, is typical Tales fodder involving abstract ideallism and sexual tension that will no doubt span the opening minute to the closing scene. (The two main heroes like each other, quite openly. The girl denies it strongly when Genis makes the observation. The main dude thinks to himself that he wishes she didn’t deny it so quickly.)

GOOD NEWS #1: FREE RUNNING IS IN. This should be self-explanatory.

GOOD NEWS #2: AIR COMBOS. I managed to land a 7-hit ground-to-air combo with normal hits ALONE, and tack a special on at the end. The up+A attack on the ground launches, and you can hold up to follow. The A button, by itself or with directions, will add air combo hits. It was pretty flashy and fun.

GOOD NEWS #3: FULLY-VOICED SKITS. The Namco rep quite proudly told me that Namco is taking both Vesperia and Symphonia 2 quite seriously as far as the English versions go, and that both games are getting top-notch voice direction and fully-voiced skits (indeed I sampled a few in the demo I played).

The demo party was main dude, main chick, Genis, Raine, some talking wolf dude, and a few more underneath that I didn’t think to scoll down to check (still shaking off yesterday’s grog). The presentation is very slick, the voice acting well done, and the combat fun (other than being stuck with a shitty Wiimote + nunchuk combo). You can use the Wiimote to aim the Sorcerer’s Ring out of combat, which is handy but better NOT be why other control methods are potentially excluded.

VERDICT: The negatives are more apparent than the positives and I’m rather worried at this point. I will no doubt get it… but lately, the only reason to get Tales games is the coop multiplayer with the other two peeps. I have high hopes for Vesperia to be more worthwhile than just that. I have grave concerns about Symphonia 2.

Edit: More… right now.

Saw the New X-Box Experience demo at PAX. I have no pics or videos though. Next time I go to a convention I’ll try and remember to bring a digital camera.

Anywho, the new interface is very slick. AND it works with all current themes. The background images in current themes changes on different pages with a very visually pleasing water ripple effect. The menus, which include text, images (like game box art), your new Mii-style avatar, achievement progress, etc. are all on solid backgrounds and each of these “pages” is cycled through by simply tapping left or right. It’s all very slick and very pretty.

The blade system is integrated into the X-Box guide menu. The menu now appears in the center of your screen, and it looks and feels like a “mini” version of the current system. Everything is available from this menu that is normally on the current dashboard.

Fallout 3 looks interesting.

That’s it unless I think of more. Any questions? Find the appropriate forum topic or make a new one. Or PM me via the forum.
